This sketch of the blacksmith shop on Brattle Street in Cambridge, Massachusetts was drawn by Longfellow himself in 1840. He passed this
blacksmith shop every day on his way to Harvard College and based his
poem on it. Below the image he wrote the first two verses of the poem:
“Under a spreading chestnut tree
The village smithy stands;”
